The Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti is NVIDIA’s all-new high-end graphics card based off the same chip that is the GeForce GTX Titan. However, NVIDIA probably figured, save the best for last as NVIDIA unlocked the GPU completely meaning all 2880 Shader processors are available.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is a high-end desktop graphics card based on the Kepler architecture in 28 nm. It uses the full GK110 chip with 2880 CUDA cores and was the fastest single-chip card at the beginning of 2014. The 780 Ti is much faster than the similar named laptop graphics card Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M (based on the GK104 like the desktop GTX 770 but with lower clock rates).

Specifications And Features

The GTX 780 Ti In the past, both of those cards had some of their onboard GPU cores disabled. While the GK110 packs up to 2,880 cores, the Nvidia Titan has 2,688 of those cores enabled, while the Nvidia GTX 780 has 2,304. The GTX 780 Ti is the first GK110-based card to ship with all 2,880 processors enabled.

There are two features that the Nvidia GTX Titan offers, however, that the GTX 780 Ti doesn’t match. First is its double-precision floating-point performance. Normally, you have to buy an Nvidia workstation card to see full double-precision performance—its desktop cards are only allowed to execute DP code at 1/16 the speed. The Nvidia Titan is the exception, and neither the Nvidia GTX 780 nor GTX 780 Ti have it. The second missing element is the 6GB frame buffer that Titan offers—to date, the most RAM of any shipping consumer GPU.

We suspect, however, that this is not much of an omission. If you’re playing at 1,920 by 1,080, the average game will use 1GB to 1.5GB at most. If you’re gaming across three to six monitors or playing on a single 4K display, then RAM use will correspondingly increase. Tests show that these resolutions can chew through 2GB to 3GB of RAM, which means the GTX 780 Ti’s 3GB frame buffer is going to be more than adequate for almost any title, even in 4K.


The Nvidia GTX 780 Ti gets off to a great start in the tried and tested Battlefield 3 benchmark as it’s at least 5 percent quicker than the GTX Titan in every test and a whole 13 percent quicker at 4K. All results for the R9 290X are in its high-performance Uber Mode, yet even here the GTX 780 Ti is almost in another league, outperforming it on minimum frame rates by 13 percent or more. The two are a closer match on averages, but the upper hand is still with the GTX 780 Ti.

The GTX 780 Ti is the fastest single GPU in BioShock Infinite too, again beating both the GTX Titan and R9 290X. Compared to the latter, its minimum frame rates are 10 percent higher at 1080p and 2,560 x 1,600, and this lead improves once you make the jump to the higher resolutions of three screen Eyefinity/Surround or 4K, with the new card performing particularly well again at the latter resolution.

All high-end cards can now make easy work out of Skyrim, even at 4K, but the GTX 780 Ti is again the single GPU victor here. Its single GPU nature works in its favor too, as its minimum frame rates are more stable than the dual GPU counterparts, which tend to suffer from stuttering, as the 5,760 x 1,080 test demonstrates.
